Without getting into it, this weekend kind of kicked my butt. I know, happens to everyone. I don't like writing when I feel like this because I think everyone can kind of sense it.
I keep this poem posted next to my bed. I took a poetry class in college and we read a lot of Mary Oliver. I was looking her up a few months ago when I found this poem. I read it when I feel I'm losing focus, and I read it most every day anyway. Here's hoping it can keep you strong too.
The Journey by Mary Oliver
One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice–
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do–
determined to save
the only life you could save.
Wow great words. I’m sorry you were in that
“space”. Sometimes our heads just don’t know when to turn it down do they? I’m always here to lend an ear. Love ya lots
Thank you for sharing that poem. It brought up some vivid images and thought.
I am going through a lull as well, trying to get into my dream career that’s rather competitive and requires a variety of skills that I am still developing even out of college (masters degree).
And with the current economy I have to take work that’s not my dream job…again! It’s all so frustrating…which in turn cuts off my creativity.
great to see you found something to get you out of the cycle.
this is what i keep by my bed…
Keeping Things Whole
In a field
I am the absence
of field.
This is
always the case.
Wherever I am
I am what is missing.
When I walk
I part the air
and always
the air moves in
to fill the spaces
where my body’s been.
We all have reasons
for moving.
I move
to keep things whole.
